  4. About the Apple Macintosh CD

  6. Congratulations on purchasing your computer. This document adds to and updates the information in the manuals that came with your computer. It is a good idea to read this document now, and keep a copy handy for future reference.

  8. What’s on the Apple Macintosh CD?
  9.  
  10. This CD contains the latest system software and many other useful items for your computer. Included on this CD are the following:

  12. • Macintosh Tutorial:  Offers on-screen instructions to get started with your computer. Macintosh Tutorial comes installed on your computer, and you access it from the Guide Menu. If you need to reinstall the software, see the Read Me in the Macintosh Tutorial folder.

  14. • Extras  folder:  Contains several application programs and extensions. For information on the software in the Extras folder, see About the Extras Folder in the Extras folder.

  16. • Utilities folder:  Includes Drive Setup, an alias to Disk Copy 4.2, Disk First Aid, and SimpleText.
  17.  
  18. • System Software Installer:  Contains the System Software required to run your Macintosh computer.
  19.  
  20. • System 7.5 Update 2.0:  Contains software enhancements that improve the performance and reliability of your Macintosh computer.

  22. • Disk Images:  Contains floppy disk images for producing copies of System Software, Video Software Installer, CD-ROM Setup 5.1.1, System 7.5 Update 2.0, PowerTalk, and QuickDraw GX.

  24. • Apple MPEG Media System:  Contains the latest MPEG Media Software, Video Software, and CD-ROM Software. The MPEG Media Software is used in conjunction with the Apple MPEG Media System card. The Video Software is used in conjunction with the video input and/or the TV tuner card. The CD-ROM Software contains updated system extensions that add functionality to your computer for the support of CD-ROM drives. For more information see the MPEG Media Read Me file in the Apple MPEG Media System 1.0, MPEG Software folder.

  26. • PowerTalk:  Provides built-in electronic mail, plus the advantage of a single mailbox for all your network services. PowerTalk comes on your hard disk, although it has not been installed. Apple recommends that your computer have at least 16 MB of RAM before you install PowerTalk. For installation information, see the PowerTalk Install Read Me in the PowerTalk folder.

  28. • QuickDraw GX:  Offers enhanced printing, typography, and color publishing capabilities. QuickDraw GX comes on your hard disk, although it has not been installed. Apple recommends that your computer have at least 16 MB of RAM before you install QuickDraw GX. For installation information, see the QuickDraw GX Install Read Me in the QuickDraw GX folder.

  30. Starting Your Computer From the CD

  32. To boot your Macintosh using the Apple Macintosh CD, follow these steps:

  34. 1. Make sure the Apple Macintosh CD icon appears on your desktop.
  35.  
  36. 2. Open the Startup Disk control panel.
  37.  
  38. 3. Click the Apple Macintosh CD icon.
  39.  
  40. 4. Close the Startup Disk control panel.
  41.  
  42. 5. Choose Restart from the Special menu.
  43.  
  44. When you want to start up again from your hard disk, open the Startup Disk control panel and select your hard disk.
  45.  
  46. If you experience problems starting your computer from your boot drive, you can boot from your CD by holding down Command-Shift-Option-Delete during bootup.

  48. Reinstalling System Software From the CD
  49.  
  50. NOTE: System Software has been pre-installed on your hard drive. Only follow these steps in the event you need to reinstall System Software.

  52. Apple recommends that you use your CD as the startup disk. (See Starting Your Computer From the CD.)

  54. To reinstall system software, follow these steps:

  56. If you are using your CD as the startup disk:
  57.  
  58. 1. Click the Install System Software icon.
  59.  
  60. 2. Proceed with the installation once the Installer launches.
  61.  
  62. After you have reinstalled System Software, you should reinstall System 7.5 Update 2.0. Follow the instructions in the Read Me files in the Important Information folder.

  64. To reinstall PowerTalk or QuickDraw GX software, see the Installation Read Me files located within their respective folders.

  67. If your CD  is mounted on your desktop (you are already booted on the internal hard drive):

  69. 1. Make sure the Apple Macintosh CD icon appears on the desktop. 
  70.  
  71. 2. Open the Apple Macintosh CD.
  72.  
  73. 3. Double click the Install System Software icon.
  74.  
  75. 4. In the Easy Install dialog box, click Install.
  76.  
  77. Restart your computer when installation is done.

  79. After you have reinstalled System Software, you should reinstall System 7.5 Update 2.0. Follow the instructions in the Read Me files in the Important Information folder.

  81. To reinstall PowerTalk or QuickDraw GX software, see the Installation Read Me files located within their respective folders.
